How it works

Target reserve = monthly essential expenses × target months. Funding gap = maximum of zero and target reserve minus existing savings. Months to target = funding gap divided by monthly contribution, rounded up to the next whole month. The calculation assumes constant expenses and contributions, with no interest, inflation, withdrawals, fees or tax. A zero contribution with a positive gap means no completion date can be calculated.

Three to six months of essential expenses is a common starting heuristic, not a universal rule. Consider more coverage where income is volatile, dependants rely on you, or access to credit and insurance is limited. Keep emergency reserves accessible and evaluate deposit-provider risk.
